How to Write an Effective Article for SEO

This is a topic that a lot of people don’t address effectively. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) articles are usually written with only the keyword in mind. Most writers unfortunately don’t think about the consumer reader at all, concerned only with their client’s requirements for keyword density. As a consumer, you know that people become obstinate when they are searching for honest information and end upon a page that is just trying to sell them something. They feel betrayed and the last thing they want to do is click on another link. This has been proven over and over through analytics tools, that good writing produces next step “clicks”. So, how do you write an effective SEO article? By writing it well.
DON’T write an article that hasn’t been researched properly. There are too many articles out there on important subjects like tax law, health issues, or foreclosures that contain information that is practically useless or second-hand. Spend some time doing research prior to writing. Even if you think you know the subject matter at hand, verify that your suppositions are correct. A good example of this is the “mosquito eater” myth. Those giant mosquito looking bugs that fly around the house have a word of mouth reputation for eating mosquitoes. This is just a myth. They don’t eat mosquitoes and are just a common fly. However, this has been told over and over again as “truth”.
DON’T play loose with the facts to support the client’s goals. This can potentially get you into a great deal of trouble. An example of this is when writing about a pill or supplement. Do not make the mistake of diagnosing or prescribing medicine, accidentally. There are very specific laws governing health issues. Don’t say that a pill will make you lose weight, or that a pill will grow hair back. Use words like “may” and “might”.
DO be positive. Write articles from a positive point of view. So many article writers today write from a glass is half full perspective. “You are probably losing sleep over all of the bills piling up…” is an example of the first line of an article that is currently on the web. Instead write: “There is no need to lose sleep over bills.” It will keep the reader interested and in a positive mood. The last thing you want is for your reader to run away from the computer crying. You want to inspire them to act, click, and buy.
DO treat the reader like they have a brain in their head. All of us know when someone is pulling our leg to get us to do something. Expect that your readers do, too. Writing an effective article is all about forging a real dialog, even if half that dialog exists in someone else’s head. Be forthright with your readers and they will respond.
DO use keywords effectively. If you can figure out how to put them in the title, go for it. The first paragraph is where you the most keyword action.
Writing effectively for SEO isn’t rocket science. It’s just practical, even, and consistent writing. Think about whether or not you would turn the article into your high school English teacher rather than Ezine, and you ought to do just fine.
