Choosing Between Digital Or Offset Press Prints

by: wheatley70 on Date: Sat, 7 Aug 2010 Time: 5:43 AM

Offset Lithography printing is probably the most commonly used printing technology. But of late digital printing has got a great deal of good press on account of the greater flexibility it offers. This article examines some easy ways for a customer to choose between these two forms of printing for any given print job. There is really no one good way of printing, both methods offering very different advantages to the customers. A good understanding of the respective pros and cons would allow a person to make an informed decision about what the print job needs.

Cost Of Printing

Offset printing always works out cheaper for very large quantities while digital press printing is ideal for smaller runs. A company that is looking at producing a specific event based poster could consider digital prints while a company brochure could be accomplished through offset printing.

Medium Of Printing

Offset printing produces high quality prints across a variety of surfaces while digital prints are often not as clear except on very regular mediums. Ask the printer what works better on the given medium in terms of quality or intensity of color.

Speed

Offset printing requires many mechanical procedures like the preparation of films, proofs and plates. It is usually a painstakingly long process and therefore not suited to urgent requirements. Digital printing on the other hand is relatively much faster. In case there is any error last minute change, it is easier to rectify it in the case of digital prints.

Customization

Last but not the least, digital press printing allows personalization of every print which allows a more customizable marketing campaign. Offset printing which relies on physical plates produces only one kind of print which may not be ideal for personalized direct marketing campaigns. Given the increased preference for being able to reach out to niche audiences with relevant messages, digital marketing offers greater marketing benefit.
