Mobile Computing and Business

by: EricDunbar on Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2010 Time: 9:40 PM

Today’s wireless technology has given birth to a new and exciting trend in computing and has forever changed the way we do business. To take advantage of everything that mobile computing has to offer, millions of Internet users are using portable devices like pocket pc’s personal digital assistants (PDAs), laptops and smart phones.

The term "Mobile computing" is used to describe the use of computing devices, which usually interact in some fashion with a central information system, while away from the normal, fixed workplace. Mobile computing technology enables the mobile worker to create, access, process, store and communicate information without being constrained to a single location.

Mobile computing is accomplished through the use of computer hardware, system and applications software and wireless technology which allows information to be transmitted without the use of wires. Today’s business in this modern age of computers is all about being able to interact spontaneously at anytime and anywhere. The wireless technology of mobile computing has revolutionized how people connect with each other.

The advantages of mobile computing
With the use of smart phones like the Blackberry, iPhone and Android, people are able to the Internet whenever and wherever they want to. It is not possible to check your email, talk, text, social network, look up information, use photography and video technology all from a wireless device that can fit into your shirt pocket.

Companies are quickly embracing the rapidly changing world of information and technology. Business owners and executives are learning how to take advantage of mobile computing and are rocketing themselves to the top of the marketplace. Any business that does not adapt to mobile computing technology will ultimately be forced to the rear and perhaps even be forced out of business.

This fast growing technology of mobile computing is being used by an increasing number of employers wanting to stay connected with their employees. They are also using video and audio experiences to create new opportunities and approaches to business that are making them more efficient, productive and innovative with their work.

The disadvantages of mobile computing
Although many businesses experience success in the efficiency and productivity of their employees there is still the possibility of legal issues that could arise as a result of embracing this new media.

Whenever there is an advance in technology, there is also an increase of problems. For instance there are increasing amounts of law cases stating how employers can be liable when accidents happen while mobile devices are being used when driving, crossing streets, or when employees are simply not being attentive because they are preoccupied with their mobile devices.

Although the use of advanced mobile computing technologies can give a business a considerable edge over the competition in productivity, growth and efficiency, it is also important to be mindful of the possibilities of new legal issues that come with such progress in technology.

Even with the possible legal issues of using mobile computing technology, the enormous growth it offers cannot be ignored. That is why you should educate yourself and your employees on the proper use of mobile computing devices. By doing so you can be assured that your business can grow without limitations and legal ramifications.
