If you have already had an addition done or a roof replacement, and you want a second opinion, call your home inspector. Do a little research and consult your friends, or using inspector trade associations, such as the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), or so on, to find companies who retain the highest standards or professionalism.

Don't examine your roof alone. Emergency personnel and professional roofers recommend that you always have someone nearby while taking care of a roof. Bring adequate tools, the vital tool being a ladder. Make sure the steps you bring is tall enough to extend a foot or two at night edge of the roofing. Always plant the step ladder on solid ground. Never position the steps at too steep of an angle. If the approach is too steep, you risk falling over backwards while you're into it. It's also a good option to have your spotter make sure that the ladder stays firmly on the ground while you're climbing the idea.

But if the roof seems too large to safely inspect, IT IS. Flat roofs and the wonderful with gentle slopes are not hard to inspect. If ones roof is too steep, you should play it safe and get a roofing professional inspect it. Trust your gut. If you're uneasy about climbing around on the roof, call a skilled.

Wear the proper shoes. Make sure that your shoes provide enough traction to remain you from slipping. Tennis shoes are usually a good choice, because they provide for good grip and some sort of soft sole. The soft sole will are going to be less likely to damage the roof whenever you walk on it.

Know your roof's materials. Know what type of material your roof is made from, and how to avoid damaging it. Terracotta and slate, for example, are extremely fragile and can crack or shatter under your unwanted weight. This poses a chance to both your roof and to yourself. Wood, composite and metal roofs can better withstand being walked with.
