Hearing aids had been in existence for many decades. However, the hearing aids before were not as sophisticated as the ones that we have today. This is the product of technology. Today, children who are hard-of-hearing can already wear the hearing aid - early in their childhood. These hearing gadgets are flexible and adaptable to children.
Having a child wear hearing aid at an early age can be difficult and challenging to parents. These children who may be required to wear these ear gadgets have congenital defects. They have the hearing impairment at birth. There are also children who became deaf at a later stage and this is known as acquired hearing loss.
Scientific researches on auditory sense reveal that children in the womb of the mother already are blessed with the sense of hearing. Those with congenital defects were never as lucky since they have not heard any sound inside the womb. These poor infants miss this during that important developmental stage. Because of this no-hearing experience, the auditory center of the deaf child’s brain has to make up for the loss of hearing time. Auditory stimulation should be made by the parents in order to develop hearing pathways from the ears to the brain. If the parents fail to do this, there is big chance that the child will fail to develop language and speech capabilities. Thus the child becomes deaf-mute.
The younger the child, the more susceptible he is to flexibility. The brain of the child is more flexible to the new sounds and will eventually be able to learn auditory skills. This brings to the recommendation of having a child wear the hearing aid at an early stage in his life. He is making up for the lost time so he has to hear sounds to be able to mimic and speak out what he hears.
Acceptance by these children of the hearing aid can be troublesome. And much more, the child will have difficulties in adjusting to the use of hearing aids. So – the younger the child when he wore his ear gadget, the stronger would the auditory pathway in the brain will be.
Children as they are, they have the tendency to reject the hearing aids. Infants and toddlers are very curious and once the aid is placed on the ear, there is tendency that the kid will explore the presence of this gadget in his body. In the exploration process, the kid will remove the hearing aid. For very small children, parents should be very vigilant because there is a tendency for the kids to put the gadget in the mouth. Unless there may be discomfort for the child, keep replacing the hearing aid every time it is pulled out. There will come a time when the kid will get used to it.
Since the hearing aid is very important in the development of the language skill of the kid, parents should endeavor to help the child get accustomed to the gadget. The impaired sense of hearing can be easily addressed through the use of the gadget. However, losing the power to speak is more of a crisis. You would not want the child to be deaf and mute at the same time. Let the child hear sounds at early stage so that he can mimic what he hears – speak the words clearly. With a partnership between the ear specialist and the parents, children with congenital hearing impairments can live a better life.
