How to Do Keyword Research and Find the Right Search Words for Your Website

by: Racb1978Anthony on Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2013 Time: 9:30 PM

Keyword research is much more difficult than some marketers make it out to be. If you want to be successful with your website, keywords have to be the foundation to your success. Finding the right Search Words is a big step to the process and if you get this wrong, all of your effort could be in vain and your search engine rankings could take years to take off. Instead, you need to do the keyword research process correctly and you need to find the right keywords from the very beginning. Below, you will find steps to do keyword research the free way, so that you don't have to spend any money, but you can still find the right search words for you to be targeting.

Use the Google keyword tool to research search words

The Google keyword tool is provided free, by the Google company. They provide this tool so that people with websites can use it to look up keywords to start targeting with Adwords, their paid advertising system. However, it can also be useful for search engine optimization and researching search words to optimize your website for, to rank in their free section. You don't have to pay for advertisements on Google, paid ads are simply an option. If you can rank your website in their natural/organic/free section, you can get continuous traffic to your website without having to pay any direct advertising fees. The Google keyword tool can be found by simply searching this on Google. The first step is to type in a beginning keyword and the tool will locate dozens or potentially hundreds of other keyword phrases. These are search words that can be very valuable for you to start targeting. Some of them will have thousands of searches per month, others will get just hundreds. You need to have a good mix of low and high competition phrases, so that you can be successful all around.

Check the competition of the search words manually

Checking the competition of the search words is an entirely different story. You cannot do this as easily as it was to find the keywords in the beginning. Companies like Searchwords will tell you that checking the competition manually can take an extensive amount of time, that's why they use keyword research tools for their clients. However, it still possible to do it manually, and you can use the below steps to do it.

Check the page rank of the websites in the top 10

The page rank of websites in the top 10 should be below 3 if you want to have an easy time ranking for this tickler search word.

Check how well optimized the pages are that are ranking

If the search word is found in the title, description and URL of the page, this shows you that the page has been well optimized to rank for that particular search word. It can take an extensive amount of effort to get results if you are targeting a search word that has very high competition.
