The Rise and Fall of Telemarketing by Martha Retallick

The latest issue of Graphic Design USA reports that the U.S. federal "do not call" registry has been "spectacularly successful. More than 12.5 million people signed up to block phone solicitations in the first four days, and more than 60 million are ultimately expected to do so."

The graphic design industry trade publication noted that this was a positive development, because it is "a rare victory for privacy and decorum." In addition, Graphic Design USA notes that "[B]ig marketers are reportedly already shifting marketing dollars from phone solicitations to direct mail, a needed boost for the graphic arts."

Nothing like a boost for the graphic arts. Which leads me to offer the following list of Five Reasons Why Postcards Are Better Than Those Telemarketing Calls: A postcard will never interrupt your quiet family dinner at home. You don't have to send postcards to people who don't want them. You can put a postcard in your pocket and carry it around town with you. Carrying telemarketers is a lot harder. There are a lot of postcard collectors out there. Who knows, they may be collecting YOUR cards. But except for Tom Mabe, I don't know of any telemarketing call collectors.
